META MACHINES

In his works “Metamatic”, the swiss artist Jean Tinguely was not painting himself, but he constructed mechanical meta-machines producing art works. Today, our machines for design become computers with their software-tools. In the workshop we are going to build a mechanical & informational installation with optical fibers and algorithms. The participants will work in parallel in designing the physical structure of the installation and programming it as artificial life.

Within this workshop we will develop a balance between materiality,structure and code. While introducing the participants to computational pattern recognition and pattern synthesis, like neural networks, the system will be expressed visually through an active light installation consisting from

thousands of individually controllable optical fibers. These fibers will in be interwoven into a synthetic textile mesh that varies in density, pattern or thickness to project different atmospheres in space. The installation will be material and immaterial at the same time.

Bundles of glass fibers, a range of predefined modular connectors and basic weaving techniques will constitute the main structure. Additional technology (namely a projector and a Kinect-Camera) will be used to capture the program’s output and the environmental inputs to create a feedback-loop. While learning and adapting to its own structure, the system will autonomously adjust its behavior and spatial patterns will emerge.

WE WILL DEVELOP STRATEGIES HOW TO STRUCTURALLY BUNDLE AND CONNECT THE FIBERS INTO A SPATIAL SCULPTURE OUT OF THOUSANDS OF LINEAR ELEMENTS. WE WILL DESIGN PARAMETRIC DETAILS, IN ORDER TO CREATE A 3- DIMENSIONAL NETWORK, AN OPTICAL FUR, A FOREST PROJECTING LIGHT.

DAY 1 > INTRODUCTION AND FIRST EXPERIMENTS
Presentation of the task. Introduction to Processing-framework, and to the material optical fibres. First experiments.

DAY 2 > CONNECTING AND DETAILING
Test for the physical form-finding of the fibers. Test for the optical characters of the fibers with projectors as actuators and Kinectcameras as sensors. Development of structural connections for the fiber-structure.

DAY 3 > BEHAVIOR
Scripting in Processing, introduction to neural nets, especially SOM (self-organization Map), ideas for overall structure and deployment.

DAY 4 > PROTOTYPES
Initial prototypes, development of structure and testing behaviors.

DAY 5: REFINEMENT & PRESENTATION
Assembly tests and design for construction workflow. Adjustment of behaviors. Production of additional elements and components and final assembly of the structure.
